Queen biopic: “yes folks it is finally happening!”

From the BBC

The long-awaited biopic of the British rock group Queen is apparently going ahead after years of false starts.

Initially Sacha Baron Cohen was attached to star as Freddie Mercury, then director Dexter Fletcher dropped out. But now, according to the band anyway, the film will happen.

A statement on their website reads: “Yes folks, it IS finally happening.

“Award winning director Bryan Singer is the man who will be bringing the Queen and Freddie story alive. If you’ve ever seen Singer’s X-Men films, or the groundbreaking movie The Usual Suspects, you’ll know this is a director with extraordinary imagination and style.”

The statement adds that Queens show-stealing performance at Live Aid in 1985 will be recreated.

Mr Robot actor Rami Malek has signed on to play Freddie Mercury, though other casting is yet to be announced.

“Rami has great presence and he’s utterly dedicated to the project. He’s completely living and breathing Freddie already, which is wonderful,” said the band.

Pre-production begins next week in the UK with principal photography in London from September.
