…..we’ve just bought a killer collection of rare jazz – obtained from the private collection of an ex-employee of the legendary London jazz record shop ‘Dobells’. CLIFFORD BROWN Memorial Album: 1956 US first press 10-track Deep Groove Mono vinyl LP on the ‘Lexington Ave’ address Blue Note label, with no ‘r’ in ‘Note’ & the ‘ear’ & ‘RVG’ etchings in both run-outs. This is one of the holy grails of Blue Note collecting. Don’t waste your time trying to find a mint one (they don’t exist!), buy a cheaper alternative & marvel at the sound quality….
…this beats any CD version hands down & the disc has been professionally cleaned & play graded. Complete with the original pasted picture sleeve, this example is graded G/G- & comes from the private collection of a former staff member for Dobells record shop in Charing Cross, London. More info here
ART BLAKEY & THE JAZZ MESSENGERS A Night At Birdland Vol. 1 & 2: 60s US 10-track mono 2-LP vinyl set on Blue Note, featuring Blakey surrounding himself with some of the greatest jazz musicians in the US of the day, including Clifford Brown, Lou Donaldson, Horace Silver & Curly Russell…..
…Three sides of the labels have the ‘West 63rd’ address & both records are complete with their second issue pasted picture sleeves. More info here
BOOKER ERVIN The Trance: 1967 US first edition 3-track stereo LP on the dark blue & silver label with ‘trident’ Prestige logo to the right & the ‘203 S’ address along the bottom, & ‘Van Gelder’ stamped in the run-outs. Also stars Jaki Byard on Piano, Reggie Workman on Bass & Alan Dawson on Drums, more info here
ALBERT AYLER In Greenwich Village: 1968-72 US second issue of the 1967 4-track stereo LP, on the black label with red border “impulse!” & “abc” in a multicolour box. Includes ‘For John Coltrane’ & ‘Change Has Come’ recorded at the Village Theatre on the 26th of February 1967 alongside Joel Friedman [cello], Beaver Harris [drums], Alan Silva & Bill Folwell alternating on bass, plus ‘Truth Is Marching In’ & ‘Our Prayer’ at the Village Vanguard concert on the 18th of December 1966, more info here
JOHN COLTRANE Trane’s First Ride 1951: Limited Edition 60s US-only 8-track LP, containing rare broadcast recordings captured live at Birdland in January 1951, a collector’s item for it contains some of John Coltrane’s earliest recordings. Theyoung Trane is on tenor sax & Dizzy Gillespie can be heard on electrifying form on trumpet, with backing from Milt Jackson, J.J. Johnson, Billy Taylor, James Foreman, Percy Heath & Art Blakey. The unique pasted picture sleeve is still in openshrink & the vinyl appears Excellent to Near Mint with little evidence of play, more info here
KENNY BURRELL Midnight Blue: Rare 1963 US first press 7-track mono LP on the ‘New York USA’ address label, with the ‘ear’ markings & the ‘Van Gelder’ stamps in the run-outs & a deep groove on side two. This is one of Kenny’s most well known &best loved works for Blue Note, expertly backed by tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine, bassist Major Holley, drummer Bill English, & Ray Barretto on conga. This copy originates from the private collection of a former staff member for Dobellsrecord shop in Charing Cross, London & the pasted picture sleeve has the tax import stickers still attached on the back, more info here
ANDREW HILL Point Of Departure: 1964 US first press 5-track mono LP on the ‘New York USA’ address label, with the ‘ear’ markings & the ‘Van Gelder’ stamps in the run-outs. This is still one of the ultimate Blue Note dates that pointed the way to the future for jazz, with expert backing from Eric Dolphy, Joe Henderson, Richard Davis & Anthony Williams. More info here
ANDREW HILL Compulsion!!!!! 1967 US first press 4-track mono LP on the ‘New York USA’ address label, with the ‘Van Gelder’ stamps in the run-outs. First rate Progressive Jazz recorded with a large, percussion-heavy band featuring Freddie Hubbard (trumpet, flugelhorn), John Gilmore (tenor saxophone, bass clarinet), Cecil McBee or Richard Davis (bass), Joe Chambers (drums), Renaud Simmons (conga) & Nadi Qamar (percussion).
