Brit Awards 2017: David Bowie dominates – good idea, bad idea? What do you think?

From the BBC

Bowie won best British male and best album, would it have been better to award it to someone new? Tell us what you think?

David Bowie had previously only won four Brit awards during his career

The nominations were a showcase for the diversity of British music, but in the end David Bowie dominated the 2017 Brit awards.

The star, who died last January, was awarded best British male and best British album, for his mournful swansong, Blackstar.

His victory meant that grime artists left without any trophies, despite a breakthrough year for the genre.

However, Skepta stole the show with a blazing performance of Shut Down.

South London MC Stormzy also joined Ed Sheeran on stage for a new version of his single Shape Of You; while Emeli Sande, the soul star who started out singing on tracks by Wiley and Chipmunk, won best British female.

Rag ‘N’ Bone man was the other big winner of the night taking home two awards – the critics choice award and best British breakthrough act.

Rag ‘N’ Bone Man was ‘nearly speechless’ at his two Brit awards

As well as honouring Bowie, the Brits paid tribute to George Michael, who died on Christmas day.

His former Wham! bandmates Andrew Ridgeley, Pepsi and Shirlie, made an emotional speech, saying: “His beautiful voice will live on forever as a gift to us all.”

Coldplay’s Chris Martin then sang an understated but moving version of Michael’s A Different Corner, duetting with a recording of the star’s own voice.

  1. I think it’s a good thing David Bowie dominated the ‘Brit Awards’. I’m surprised David Bowie won the awards he was nominated for, as a win for him at these awards shows is very rare.

Music Awards should be about who makes the best music, and the best music release of 2016 was David Bowie’s album ‘Blackstar’. In the near future the majority of albums etc release by new emerging music stars will forgotten, people will still be buying the ‘Blackstar’ album in over 20yrs time.

David Bowie has been nominated for awards many times where he has been expected to win, only to lose to new emerging artists. And new emerging artists who are forgotten very quickly.

  2. Bowie’s music has been the backdrop to my entire life and I ALWAYS looked forward to his next release because I simply knew that it would speak to my life currently. Also, always found that at first listen I wasn’t too sure that I liked the new works but after listening over and over found that the songs grew on my more and more and I simply LOVED almost EVERY. SINGLE. THING. that he wrote. Honestly, I can’t say that he wouldn’t have deserved these honors but I also think that he should have been awarded things like this BEFORE passing on. Myself – I will ALWAYS miss the Starman and sincerely hope that he is ‘waiting in the sky’ to color my afterlife.
