BEST ART VINYL 2016:

CELEBRATING THE CREAM OF RECORD COVER ART

On November 23rd 2016 Art Vinyl launches ‘Best Art Vinyl 2016’, its search for the most creative and well-designed record cover of the year, joining an archive of stunning designs from the past twelve years.

A diverse shortlist of 50 striking record covers, from music artists including Rhianna, Madness and Underworld will be nominated for the award and the public will be invited to vote online or in person for their favourites, which will ultimately decide the overall winner.

Following last year’s hugely successful format, nominations were again chosen by a panel of highly respected music industry design experts and previous award winners, with the addition of 2015 Best Art Vinyl winner, Dave Stansbie of the Creative Corporation, resulting in an experts’ definitive collection of sleeve art.

The award will be accompanied by the launch of exhibitions across Europe. The final winners will be revealed, alongside a striking window installation and exhibition at The Hari Hotel in Belgravia, London on 5th January 2017.

Last year, Best Art Vinyl 2015 reached over 16,000 participating voters in the annual award which celebrates the best in art, photography and graphic design in modern music culture. The public’s favourite cover of 2015 was the Creative Corporation’s dark and atmospheric birds design for David Gilmour’s fourth solo studio album, ‘Rattle that Lock’.

Previous winners also include; Dan Hillier’s ‘Falls’ for Royal Blood’s eponymous album and work from the sixteenth century for The Fleet Foxes eponymous LP by Dutch artist, Pieter Bruegelrd and the public will be invited to vote online or in person for their favourites, which will ultimately decide the overall winner.

Best Art Vinyl founder, Andrew Heeps explains; “I founded Art Vinyl back in 2004 as I believed that a new generation would still appreciate this format and the added artistic value from the sleeve designs. With vinyl well and truly back in business it looks as if the public would agree.  Quite simply, record cover art has never been so relevant. It’s fitting that, now in our 12th year of Best Art Vinyl, we continue to champion the 12” format.

With so many amazing sleeve designers, this annual celebration will hopefully inspire and bring prominence to many new artists and designers, bringing together those unsung heroes of the music industry. The Best Art Vinyl Award is becoming the visual accompaniment to the vinyl revival and is now the music industry’s recognised award for art and design which celebrates a format that has once again been fully embraced by the major record labels.”

Public voting will begin on 23rd November 2016 in participating venues and on www.artvinyl.com.

The winners will be announced on 5th January 2016 at The Hari Hotel, Belgravia London accompanied by an exhibition of winners and shortlisted entries in the window of The Hari.
