Noel Gallagher paid tribute to Caroline Aherne during a concert in the US on Saturday evening, a few hours after learning that his friend had died from cancer.
Aherne had been ill for many years, battling alcoholism and depression in addition to suffering from retinal, bladder, lung and throat cancer. She died at home in Timperly, Greater Manchester, at the age of 52.
Performing at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, Mr Gallagher told the crowd: “I want to dedicate the next song to a friend of mine who died this afternoon.
“Her name was Caroline and she was a very, very, very funny woman
“She used this next song on a very, very, very, very brilliant sitcom in England called The Royle Family.”
Looking upwards, he said: “So, wherever you are,” before launching into a moving performance of Half the World Away, the bittersweet song used as the theme tune to Aherne’s much-loved, multi-award winning TV series.
A few hours before the concert the High Flying Birds frontman posted a picture of Aherne on his Instagram page, saying: RIP Kaz.. I shall sing for you tonight. (My god you made us laugh!)”
