David Bowie hid a beautiful secret in the Blackstar vinyl that only comes out when it’s left in the sun

‘Stars are never sleeping / Dead ones and the living’

That enormous black star on David Bowie’s last album looks so sombre in light of his death, but it isn’t as bleak as it first appears.

As an Imgur user discovered this week, if the vinyl gatefold is left out in the sun (N.B – not the record itself, you’ll ruin it), its star becomes a galaxy.

It’s quite a touching little secret, and a nice nod to Bowie’s immortality as a musical and cultural icon.

The album was intended as a “parting gift” for fans, but Bowie was working on music right up until his death.

“At that late stage, he was planning the follow-up to ‘Blackstar’, and I was thrilled,” long-serving producer Tony Visconti told Rolling Stone, with five demos having apparently been played around with.
