PJ Harvey will release a new album this year

PJ Harvey is set to release her first album since 2011 on April 15. The album, called the Hope Demolition Project, will be the double Mercury Prize-winning musician’s ninth studio album.

Harvey, who rose to fame in the Nineties with her distinctively poetic post-punk sound, recorded the album during her residency at Somerset House last year. The project, which was called Recording in Progress, saw Harvey and her production team record inside a purpose-built installation as ticketed audiences watched through the one-way glass.

Lead single The Wheel will receive its first UK play this Thursday on Steve Lamacq’s BBC 6 Music show. In the meantime this trailer – directed by cinematographer Seamus Murphy –  features clips of that song as well as another track, The Community of Hope:

Harvey was inspired to write the album after travelling across Kosovo, Afghanistan and Washington DC over the past four years. “When I’m writing a song I visualise the entire scene,” she said in a statement. “I can see the colours, I can sense the mood, I can see the light changing.  Gathering information from secondary sources felt too far removed for what I was trying to write about. I wanted to smell the air, feel the soil and meet the people of the countries I was fascinated with.”

The musician’s last album Let England Shake, released in 2011, won aMercury Prize, as did 2001’s Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea. In 2013 Harvey was awarded an MBE for services to music.

The Hope Demolition Project will be released on April 15 on Island records. Harvey will be touring festivals around Europe this summer, including Field Day in London on June 12.
