Bruce Springsteen has announced the latest instalment in his thorough excavation and reconfiguration of his back catalogue. In 2010, Springsteen’s 1978 album Darkness on the Edge of Town was turned into a multi-disc behemoth of an album, accompanied by another version of the record. Now The River, from 1980, is to get the same treatment.

The four-CD and three-DVD set – called The Ties That Bind: The River Collection – features not only the double album Springsteen released, but also the single disc version of the album that had originally been planned, plus a 22-track selection of outtakes. It also includes a documentary by Thom Zinny about the making of the album – as reissues of Born to Run and Darkness have – plus a film of a 160-minute show recorded on 5 November 1980, the day after Ronald Reagan was elected president.

“It was a nice place in our development,” Springsteen says of the album in Zinny’s documentary. “At the time, I was pouring through a variety of history books just to contextualise myself, understand where I came from and what that meant. I wanted to write songs of breadth that had some depth to them. And I knew I wanted to write about the place I lived and I wanted to write about social forces that I felt played through that history. I devoured quite a few history books at the time, trying to get a sense of where everything came from.”

The package comes in a 10-by-12-inch box with a 148-page hardback book. It will be released on 4 December.
