Dick’s Picks: The Frank Wess Quintet, Jazz on UK Atlantic?….

MRA

This week our resident vinyl guru ‘Mr A’ has picked this unusual 1954 UK 7-track 10″ vinyl LP issued exclusively to the members of the ‘Record Of The Month’ Club & never available for commercial sale. This was basically a UK issue of the US Commodore 10″, legitimately issued and even with the permission of Leonard Feather to use his sleeve notes. Although it says that the recordings were made in May 1954, by that time Frank Wess was recording for Savoy, so the 1952 Commodore sessions are the most likelysource. In a remarkable demonstration of ‘Domain Jacking’ nearly fifty years before it became a common phenomenon, Lou Preager registered the ‘Atlantic’ name in the UK before the US giant, so this Atlantic is no relation at all to the US conglomerate of the same name!
