Sol Invictus, the alt-metal group’s first release since 1997’s Album of the Year, will feature 10 tracks and a strong Roxy Music influence
Faith No More have announced details of their first album in 18 years. The alt-metal band will release Sol Invictus, their seventh studio album, in May through their own label, Reclamation. It will be their first since 1997’s Album of the Year.
According to bassist Billy Gould, who produced the record, Sol Invictus will be “hypnotic and gothic – we’re coming back to where we were with our first album”.
The news follows the November 2014 release of limited-edition singleMotherfucker, the band’s first new material in almost as long. A live show at San Francisco’s Amoeba Records store followed, along with another new songSuperhero. Both tracks are set to appear on Sol Invictus.
According to the group, the record – which was recorded in Oakland, California – will be influenced by Roxy Music and Siouxsie and the Banshees. Gould said: “When we split up, we explored what we could do on our own. During that time, we each developed what was a natural part of ourselves. Now, coming back, we have a wider perspective so we can do things we didn’t even think of back in the day. If we were to decide to do country-western music, it would still sound like a Faith No More album. Together we have a strong collective identity, and when we work together it makes its own animal.”
Faith No More formed in 1981, releasing a string of acclaimed albums through the late 80s and early 90s that mixed metal with funk and pop influences. They split in 1998 but reunited to tour in 2009. The will be playing in the UK at Download this June.
